It’s your fault!

This may offend some of you, but you will not hear an apology from me. I am sick of hearing people place blame onto others for things that happen in their lives. And if they cannot find a specific person to blame, they blame some vague concept or ideal like God or the Government for their problems. Most recently I have heard an amazing amount of blame placed on our Government, Banks, and Businesses for the loss of peoples homes and jobs. I will admit, they have played a part, but they are not the reason. You are! The government did not make you take out a mortgage you could not afford. And by afford I do not mean your credit score tells you that you can afford it.

Any time you take out a loan on something you cannot afford to pay cash for on the spot, you are putting yourself at the mercy of the bank, your employer and anyone else you depend on to pay that loan. When one of those people decide to tighten the screws and make it hard for you to pay your loan, it is still your fault. You signed the loan! The bank didn't force you into signing your mortgage and agreeing to the terms you can no longer meet. Your employer who fired you didn't sign your mortgage...

That brings me to my next point of all of the people crying about the job market and not being able to find jobs, or hold onto the jobs they have. Look around you, there are millions of others that are not having any troubles finding or keeping jobs. The problem is you, not the market! You did not make yourself valuable enough to hold on to. You decided to show up to work and be lazy, or unpleasant to deal with. You decided to get comfortable, stop learning, and stop trying to do more. You are the one who thought the company owed you something and forgot that you were there to server them and they only owed you the paycheck that you agreed to. "But Steve, I couldn't help it, the company completely closed down or laid off everyone." Stop crying about it and get out there and find something else. "But I can't find any jobs in my field." Oh man, the excuses pile on don't they! Get out there and learn a new skill, or lower your high, mighty, yet still unemployed standards and take a job that you feel is beneath you! I see help wanted signs every day at gas stations, grocery stores, fast food restaurants, and many other places so do not try tell me you cannot find a job.

There are very few circumstances where YOU are not to blame for what happened such as a natural disaster. However, you are to blame for how you deal with that disaster. Life can be hard and extremely painful at times, but you and only you can determine where you go from that point. Stop waiting for God, the Government, or someone other than yourself to come and save you. Stop complaining, making excuses and placing blame for why you can't. You do not inherently "deserve" anything in this life, you are born with no rights or freedoms. These are things you must work for and earn every day of your life.

I Cannot Teach You

It is next to impossible to teach someone who is unwilling to learn. I have someone in my life that is this way about money as well as many other "new" ideas. Who it is, is irrelevant and for this piece we will call the person JD for John/Jane Doe.

JD always seems to be stuck in this rut and can never seem get ahead. When you ask JD why, JD will always have an excuse for being in the rut and will come up with every excuse not to get out of the rut. Don't get get me wrong, JD loves the idea of getting out of the rut, but is unwilling to do the work it takes to get out of the rut. I believe the mindset is that JD believes that the every day work, working multiple jobs, cleaning the house, taking care of the kids, etc. is enough and the money should just flow and the problems should just disappear.

The reality is that you have to think about this as being stuck in this massively deep hole in the ground. It is going to take a lot of work to first figure out how to get out and then following through and actually climbing your way to the top and out of the hole. If you continue to do what you have been doing you will never be able to climb out of that hole. You will sit there and wander around at the bottom of this hole waiting for someone to rescue you.

The reason I say that it is next to impossible to teach someone who is unwilling to learn is because like many people, JD is stuck in this hole waiting to be rescued. Even if I come along and drop a rope down for JD to climb up, it will not help. JD will start to climb, but quickly decide that the climb is still too hard and will expect to be pulled up rather than putting in the effort.

This is the same with money. Unless you are a one in a billion lottery winner or a trust fund baby, money is not just going to fall at your feet. You can be given the tools to become rich, but if you are unwilling to put them to use because it is too hard or too confusing, you will never become rich and you will stay in that rut the rest of your life.
